About Me
Hello, my name is Joan Killeen, and I am a psychiatric nurse practitioner with a Master's degree in nursing from Stony Brook University. I began my nursing journey at Excelsior College for my Bachelor's degree and continued at Ellis Hospital School of Nursing for my associate degree in 1998.
Over the past four years, I have had the privilege of working with patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings, specializing in psychiatric and substance use disorders. My experience spans a wide range of mental health conditions.
In therapy, I approach each patient with compassion and empathy, striving to empower and motivate them to achieve optimal wellness. I am dedicated to helping patients lead purposeful and fulfilling lives.

During our first session together, you can expect me to focus on your positive attributes and collaborate with you to set achievable goals. I am here to encourage, motivate, and inspire you along your journey toward a meaningful life. Together, we will work on education, transforming negative thought patterns, and developing coping skills to overcome challenges and build resilience.

I believe in creating a compassionate and supportive environment where individuals can safely process their trauma and explore effective coping strategies to manage PTSD.
Substance Use
My approach to substance use treatment is centered on comprehensive care that addresses both the physical and psychological aspects of addiction. I begin by creating a supportive and non-judgmental environment where individuals feel safe to explore their relationship with substances. Through evidence-based practices such as motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and medication-assisted treatment (MAT), I collaborate with patients to develop personalized recovery plans. These plans focus on building coping skills, managing cravings, and addressing underlying issues contributing to substance use. My goal is to empower individuals to achieve sobriety, improve their overall well-being, and lead fulfilling lives free from addiction.
